Nottingham Forest are set to make their annual addition to their ranks from Olympiacos. Defender Mohamed Drager is likely to pen terms at the City Ground from the Greek champions, according to Greek journalist Dimitris Samolis.
The Reds are still on the hunt for a right-back. Jordi Osei-Tutu is nursing a hamstring problem, whilst Chris Hughton hasn’t seemed overly convinced by Jordan Gabriel. Fin Back is also an option for the boss.
Drager boasts bags of experience. He has been with Olympiacos since September of last year. He signed from Freiburg and made 10 appearances for the club, including one in the Champions League.
The 25-year-old was born in Germany but represents Tunisia at international level. He has 19 caps for his country, scoring two goals during those outings.
It perhaps won’t appease some supporters that Drager is set to replace Gabriel. The academy graduate has seemed somewhat below-par during his appearances this season and clearly, Hughton fancies a change.
Drager is likely to arrive on loan. He will spend the 2021/22 campaign at the City Ground and if he impresses an extension seems like an easy deal to do.
Evangelos Marinakis has done similar deals in the past. Cafu, Andreas Bouchalakis, Miguel Angel Guerrero and Karim Ansarifard have all joined from the Greek giants.
Jury out for now as Drager prepares for Forest switch
As with any deal from overseas, the Reds fan base will remain sceptical. What won’t help the overriding consensus here is that he’s set to replace an academy starlet.
At 22 though, perhaps Hughton doesn’t see enough in Gabriel to consider keeping him in his team. Jayden Richardson and Back have arguably impressed the Reds boss more, with both younger options.
Fans would be wise to wait and see with Drager. He is at a nice age, could still improve and he could add some much-needed experience to Forest’s defensive ranks.
