Reading have been hit with a fresh blow ahead of Saturday’s game with Nottingham Forest – and it could help the Reds land a player they courted in the summer.
Derby aren’t the only crisis club in the Championship. The Royals have been hit with a six-point deduction this week and now some of their assets could be sold.
Forest were linked with two Reading players during the summer transfer window. Defender Tom Holmes and last season’s Player of the Year, Josh Laurent, were both on the radar.
Although Holmes would have been deemed as one for the future, Laurent is a more polished player and has been a mainstay in the team this season.
He has started all 17 league games and he could be set for an audition for a starring role in a Nottingham Forest blockbuster on Saturday.
Laurent was called ‘fantastic’ by manager Valko Paunovic after picking up the Player of the Year award last season.
He was linked with a move to Forest in the summer; with the Reds thought to have made a seven-figure bid for the former Shrewsbury man.
Class: Forest have to go full steam ahead for Laurent
It’s fair to say that the Reds could still welcome another central midfielder into their ranks.
Ryan Yates and Jack Colback are in possession of the shirts at the moment, with James Garner only on loan from Manchester United.
Braian Ojeda has been added to the ranks but he’s a work in progress when it comes to English football.
At 26, Laurent isn’t really at his peak just yet and there will be more to come from the combative midfielder.
His contract expires in the summer and as a result, January looks like the perfect time for Forest to pursue Laurent.
The midfielder will need to smash his audition on Saturday…
