In 2015 Ben Hamer signed for Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan. Nine days later, he returned to Leicester with Fawaz Al Hasawi unable to provide the funds to take the goalkeeper on loan. It was a bizarre situation that typified the Kuwaiti era on Trentside.
Yesterday, six years on from his Forest spell that never was, Hamer gave Forest an early Christmas present and Steve Cooper a massive three points.
Joel Piroe had pulled a goal back for Swansea and the home side were starting to get on top of the contest at the Liberty Stadium.
As Forest broke again though, a weak shot by Jordi Osei-Tutu was fumbled into the path of Brennan Johnson who couldn’t miss from a matter of yards.
Hamer was on loan at Derby during the 2019/20 campaign. He made 25 appearances during that season before joining Swansea on a permanent deal from Huddersfield in January 2021.
He proved nothing more than a backup option for Freddie Woodman under Cooper last season and was on the bench for 26 games, including the Play-Off Final.
Hamer, 34, does have an error in his locker and yesterday, Forest benefitted from one of his moments of calamity.
What have Forest fans said about Ben Hamer?
Although his failed loan move at Forest was through no fault of Hamer’s; that hasn’t stopped supporters poking fun at him.
There really is nowhere to hide for a goalkeeper when it comes to conceding goals and they’ll always be open to criticism.
Yesterday the former Rams man was particularly poor though and in letting four goals in, he might find himself facing a fight for his shirt next week.
In typically jovial fashion, Forest fans took to Twitter to discuss Hamer and his performance against the Reds.
