Nottingham Forest will come face-to-face with a Hull City player that Chris Hughton was desperate to sign on Saturday.

Ryan Longman was linked with a move to the City Ground but instead opted to join the Tigers on loan from Brighton.

The youngster was known by Hughton from his time at the Seagulls where he was rising through the youth ranks.

During 2020/21 he spent time on loan with AFC Wimbledon in League, scoring nine goals and claiming five assists in 52 appearances.

Longman was an intriguing link to Forest. He can operate in a number of forward roles and has already showcased his versatility at Hull this season.

He can play through the middle as a number 10, or a centre forward and is also capable of operating on either flank.

Under Grant McCann, he is starting to fly. In the last five games he has played, Longman has bagged twice and claimed two assists.

With that in mind, Forest will need to monitor him closely and ensure that his failed Forest move doesn’t come back to bite the Reds.

At 21, Longman would have fit the ethos at the City Ground nicely. A relatively young squad has been built this season, with players with burgeoning talent the order of the day.

Longman might have been useful for Forest

The Brighton man endured a sticky start to life at Hull. He was struggling for game time at the start of the season and has only made 13 appearances.

His versatility looks like a really useful asset though and he could really kick on during the second half of the season at the KCOM Stadium.

Hughton didn’t appear to get many of the players he wanted during the summer transfer window.

He’s now long gone from Trentside but Forest will be hoping one of his wanted players doesn’t return to haunt the Reds on Saturday.
