Nottingham Forest wanted to sign Tottenham winger Jack Clarke during the summer. Chris Hughton was an admirer of the player but the club didn’t manage to do a deal for the 21-year-old.

Now, according to Football Insider, Clarke has emerged as a transfer target for Sunderland before the transfer window closes.

The Black Cats are keen to strengthen their ranks before the end of the month. Lee Johnson’s team are finely poised for a promotion place and the addition of Clarke could get them over the line.

It’s been a struggle for the youngster at Tottenham. He moved from Leeds in 2019 for a fee in the region of £13 million.

In North London, he’s been out of the first-team picture. He’s made just four senior appearances and this season has spent most of his time playing for the under-23s.

In 17 appearances for the young guns, he’s found the net four times and registered three assists. Now, he looks set to finally get out of Tottenham and play some badly-needed first-team football.

Sunderland are in the mix for another attacker. Johnson will hope that his loan can go akin to his spell at Stoke last season, with Clarke particularly impressive.

Should Forest return for Clarke?

Given that it was actually Hughton that wanted Clarke, it does seem unlikely. Forest are in the market for another attacker, although a tried and tested option looks far more likely.

Jed Wallace, Josh Bowler and Paul Mukairu are all under consideration by the Reds. One of those three would ensure a proven Championship performer is added to the ranks.

Clarke is perhaps too much of a risk. He has only played youth team football this season and ultimately, he might require too much time to get up to scratch.

The fact a League One outfit is set to take him is perhaps telling. As a result, the Reds would be wise to look elsewhere.
