Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson could be as good as Liverpool newcomer Luis Diaz, according to Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

The Colombian cost Liverpool a staggering £50 million during the January transfer window with the 25-year-old joining from Porto.

Johnson isn’t quite at that level just yet. He has scored eight goals and claimed six assists for Forest this season, growing since a loan at Lincoln during 2020/21.

The 20-year-old was the subject of four bids from Brentford last month. The final one was as high as £18 million but the Reds stood firm and rejected the advances.

WEIRDEST European January 2022 Transfers

It is anticipated that more clubs will come forward for Johnson in the summer and MacAnthony has suggested he represents good value for money.

He told The Hard Truth podcast: “I’m happy for Liverpool to spend £50 million on Luis Diaz, you know, great, it’s fine.

“But, I’d have loved them to have spent £28 million on a player in the Championship and then that player had a sell-on clause.

“People always say that English players are too expensive. Well, I’m sorry but for me, the Championship is as good as the Portuguese league.

“Diaz has scored what, 15 goals and got 10 assists…I could show you a couple of players in the Championship capable of that.

“Brennan Johnson will probably be just as good this player in the future and he won’t get sold for £52 million, he’ll probably go for around £20 million.

Astonishing but MacAnthony probably has a point over Forest star Johnson

Liverpool could do a lot worse than sign Johnson. From a Forest perspective, we’re obviously biased but he would offer Jurgen Klopp a better option than Takumi Minamino.

Diaz could prove to be a strong signing for Liverpool but the Championship does often get overlooked.

Johnson could buck the trend though. He could be one Forest player who does leave the City Ground and get himself hooked up with a top-six Premier League club.

Tottenham are thought to have watched him, whilst Arsenal and Newcastle have also been linked.

Forest fans won’t want to hear it but Johnson is destined for the Premier League; with or without the Reds.
