Former Nottingham Forest striker David Johnson has hailed owner Evangelos Marinakis and has also suggested that Brennan Johnson could sign a new deal with the club.
In an interview with Nottinghamshire Live, Johnson has been discussing a potential new deal for the Forest forward.
The 20-year-old has been a revelation for the Reds this season and Brentford failed with four bids for him in January.
Johnson has scored 10 goals and registered six assists during the 2021/22 campaign. He’s featured in every Championship game for the Reds and Premier League interest comes as no surprise.
The player’s contract situation is causing some concern, however. At the end of the season, he will have just a year remaining on his current deal.
Johnson advises his son and he has heaped praise on Marinakis, claiming that talks started last year regarding an extension.
He told Nottinghamshire Live: “I spoke to the owner last week and had a very good chat with him down in London. He was fantastic. and he came across really well.
“Everyone thinks it’s like deadline day and you have an hour to agree on the contract.
“It’s not. The club takes their time. We’re in no rush and everything is going really well. The club have been brilliant and we’ll get there in the end.”
Positive: Forest prepared to play waiting game with Johnson
This news from David Johnson will be positive in the eyes of supporters and perhaps something can be agreed in the summer.
If Forest remain a Championship outfit, it will be pretty tricky to keep hold of the versatile forward. Handing him a new contract will at least allow the club to retain their valuation of the player.
- START: Forest should give 23-year-old maiden start
Forest fancy getting £20 million for their prized asset in January and they did well to stand firm on that valuation.
Johnson is integral to Cooper’s plans and keeping him beyond January was always viewed as a massive bonus.
These comments from the former Reds talisman will offer supporters hope that the club can keep him beyond the end of the season too.
