Andy Townsend says Nottingham Forest man Djed Spence should reject Liverpool

Nottingham Forest loanee Djed Spence has been advised not to join Liverpool during the summer by talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend.

The right-back has been in blistering form this season since joining the Reds on loan from Middlesbrough in August.

His sparking form led Forest to the FA Cup quarter-final where they were only narrowly beaten by Liverpool at the City Ground.

Spence won’t remain at Boro next season. They will cash in on their academy graduate and several top clubs are vying for his signature.

Liverpool are one of those interested parties but Townsend thinks going to Anfield could be counter-productive.

He told talkSPORT (5:43pm, March 21st): He has been outstanding. During that FA Cup run, he was absolutely fantastic. He looked like a player of real promise.

“However, I don’t think anyone should go to a club knowing you are going to go there and are going to sit and you are going to wait. If he goes to Liverpool, those two positions are incredibly strong at that club.

Spence would be made to choose Liverpool after Forest

Townsend has a point. After rediscovering himself at Forest, the last thing Spence wants is to go and sit on a bench for the 2022/23 campaign.

Some will point to the fact that Liverpool usually fire on four fronts. Spence is better than just getting a couple of opportunities here and there, however.

Spence has been magnificent this season. He has showcased his quality, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Bayern Munich all thought to be in the mix for his signature.

Forest would dearly love to keep him. That is a pipedream, however, and he looks destined to play for a massive club next season.

Liverpool may well fancy him but he’d only be a squad player there. We think he’s far too good for that and he’d be wise to choose one of the other options set to be placed on the table.
