Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson has explained to The Mirror that he’s spoken to David Beckham a few times and that he’d love to play in a World Cup.
Johnson can take a huge step towards Qatar 2022 with a win over Austria tonight. If Wales win the clash they will face Scotland or Ukraine for a place at the winter tournament.
The Forest man goes into the play-off semi-final in fine form. He’s scored 12 goals for Forest this season, registering six assists in the process.
Now, he looks set to earn a start on the international stage in a massive game for Wales.
Rob Page will be desperate to lead his team to the tournament with Wales not featuring in a World Cup since 1958.
Johnson is also keen to ensure he gets himself there and says he’d love to feature in Qatar at the end of the year.
The Forest man told The Mirror: “I have heard from David Beckham a few times but he hasn’t said anything about Wales. He is a great player. A lot of people looked up to him, including me.
“It would be unbelievable to play at a World Cup and hopefully, we can do that if we win on Thursday.
“It would mean everything to score and just anything to help the team get the win on Thursday would be good. Everyone dreams of playing at a World Cup.”
Forest will hope Johnson return fit and fresh
It’s always a good sign when players are called up for international duty. It certainly offers a hint that things are going well on the pitch.
Forest have been delighted with Johnson. Since returning from Lincoln he’s made a Forest shirt his own and the fans love him.
Last season he scored 13 goals and claimed 14 assists as the Imps lost in the play-off final to Blackpool.
Johnson has really kicked on and it’d be great to think that Forest can tempt him into signing a new contract at the City Ground.
He will have just a year to run in the summer and that could make things tricky for the Reds.
Premier League interest is vast. Right now, Johnson is playing regularly for Forest though and hopefully, an extension can be agreed on.
