Cyrus Christie was linked with a surprise return to Nottingham Forest earlier this month and he’s now officially a free agent.

Fulham have announced their retained list this afternoon and Christie appears on the list.

He will leave the club following the Cottagers winning the Championship title and reclaiming their place in the Premier League.

Christie spent the second half of last season on loan at Swansea. He gained a great deal of confidence, scoring three goals and claiming five assists.

Interestingly, Russell Martin utilised him as a right wing-back and some Forest fans were unsure whether he could fulfil that role.

Christie spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Forest. He played 44 times for the club and enjoyed a decent end to the campaign.

With the Reds landing Djed Spence they chose not to sign Christie permanently during the summer.

Now, however, it would seem as though Steve Cooper is keen to re-sign him during the summer and he wouldn’t cost a penny.

Christie leaves Fulham after four years at the club. He has made 68 appearances for the Cottagers and helped them to promotion during 2019/20.

The 29-year-old will now hope to find himself a new club where he can enjoy a full pre-season ahead of the new campaign.

Christie released by Fulham but Forest move looks unlikely

The defender wasn’t bad for Forest but he hardly fits the profile of what Dane Murphy or Steve Cooper look for in signings.

As a result, the player who cost Fulham £4 million is perhaps more of an idle link to fill some column inches instead of a concrete option.

The Reds will need a right-back in the summer. Spence is likely to return, whilst Richie Laryea is still relatively unproven.

Christie will comfortably get himself hooked up with a Championship club but it seems unlikely that it’ll be at Forest.
