Nottingham Forest look set to sign Dean Henderson on loan from Manchester United and the one question on the lips of supporters is, can James Garner still return on loan?

Forest are mixing it with the big boys now. The Reds secured promotion to the Premier League at the end of May after defeating Huddersfield at Wembley in the play-off final.

Now, Steve Cooper is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. The top-flight is an unforgiving league and plenty of new additions will be required.

It would seem as though the rebuild will start from the back. Henderson is set to arrive on a temporary deal, although Forest are set to agree on a price with United.

Can Forest still sign Garner if Henderson deal goes through?

In a word yes…although it will see the Reds find a loophole in the Premier League loan rules.

With Henderson coming in on loan, under normal circumstances, that would rule out a third loan for Garner.

However, there is a situation that could see Forest able to take the 21-year-old on another loan.

Loan rule V.7.6.1 stipulates that any temporary transfer where a fee has been agreed can see a team accommodate another loan player from the same club.

It’s thought that Henderson will be subject to a fee being agreed.

In order for the Reds to keep a space to pursue Garner, it would need to be an obligation to buy in which both teams would be unable to back out.

If Forest sign Henderson with an option to buy then they will be restricted to just signing the goalkeeper on loan from United.

Would not signing Garner be detrimental to Forest?

The midfielder was fantastic as the Reds won promotion last season.

As a result, Dane Murphy spoke of his desire to try and re-sign all of the club’s loan players from the 2021/22 campaign.

Garner will be a wait-and-see option.

Erik ten Hag will likely want to run the rule over the club’s loan players before making any hasty judgement calls.

That could see Forest forced into a wait to see whether Garner will be allowed to leave Old Trafford again.

Having played regular football the midfielder will want that to continue next season.

If Ten Hag can’t guarantee him that at United, perhaps a permanent move to Forest could be in the offing.

Forest can’t sit around and wait forever though and other irons will likely be in the fire with regards to new midfield options.
