Nottingham Forest are inching closer to the signing of Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler. Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a fee of around £9 million is being discussed and has progressed to the final stages.

Furthermore, the player is now pushing for a move to Forest. Freuler was recently told by Gian Piero Gasperini that he wasn’t part of his plans for the 2022/23 campaign.

The 30-year-old has previously been called ‘the conducter of the orchestra‘ and the ‘most underrated player in Europe’, has made over 200 appearances since joining from FC Luzern in 2016.

Last season he captained Atalanta in both games they played against Manchester United in the Champions League. He was also a first-team regular under Gasperini; making 43 appearances and laying on six assists.

The are still some formalities to sort out. Today is thought to be crucial in the negotiations but crucially the midfielder player does want to join Forest this summer.

Forest are starting to get a decent midfield together. Orel Mangala and Lewis O’Brien have been added; whilst Ryan Yates and Jack Colback remain from last season’s promotion-winning team.

Cafu is still at the club, whilst former Crystal Palace man Cheikhou Kouyate could also still join the club this summer.

Freuler is also well-versed at the international level. He’s made 46 appearances for Switzerland and is still a regular in the team even at 30.

Forest inching closer to Freuler signing

This is definitely a signing that Forest fans should be willing to get on board with. Over the past few years, Atalanta have been regular in European competition and Freuler has played every week.

It was clear in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle that the Reds are light. Particularly in midfield, the Reds were overrun on several occasions and that can’t keep happening.

Freuler will be a useful addition to the ranks. He has top-level experience and can act as a defensive shield to allow someone like O’Brien or Mangala to thrive further forward.

It sounds like today will be crucial in the negotiations and as a result, the Reds faithful will have everything crossed.
