Nottingham Forest won’t be signing Djibril Sidibe with the free agent now believed to be on his way to join AEK Athens.

Forest wanted to re-tool their right back options this summer after two departures.

Loan star Djed Spence returned to Middlesbrough at the end of last season and was then sold on to Tottenham Hotspur.

Richie Laryea was then sent back on loan to Toronto having failed to make much of an impact after his January arrival.

Neco Williams has arrived from Liverpool and shown promise for Forest, but another option is still needed in that area of the pitch.

The transfer window may be officially over but Forest can still sign free agents.

A deal for Serge Aurier looks set to be completed soon with the former Tottenham Hotspur man available after leaving Villarreal.

Aurier, 29, can provide experienced competition for Williams without breaking the bank.

Aurier isn’t the only free agent linked with Forest though, with Sidibe also thought to be in the mix.

Reports from France even suggested that Forest could sign both Sidibe and Aurier, which just wouldn’t make sense after the Williams deal.

Whilst Aurier should be on board soon, Sidibe looks set for a move elsewhere.

French newspaper L’Equipe report that Sidibe is now in advanced talks to join Greek side AEK Athens on a free transfer.

Sidibe, 30, won the World Cup with France in 2018 and then ended up in the Premier League a year later, joining Everton on loan from Monaco.

Capable at right back or left back, Sidibe is now a free agent after Monaco decided not to renew his contract this summer.

We’re used to hearing of Forest rumours involving a Greek club, but it’s usually Olympiacos!

This time it’s AEK Athens pushing to sign a rumoured Forest target, and with Sidibe seemingly off the table, we would imagine that confirmation of Aurier’s arrival at Forest can’t be far away.
