Over the past week, it’s emerged that Nottingham Forest made a stunning attempt to sign Paulo Dybala in the summer. Last night, he showcased exactly how much quality he possesses during a 2-1 win for Roma against Empoli.

Forest left no stone unturned in their efforts to strengthen Steve Cooper’s squad during the summer. No fewer than 22 players were added to the ranks and fans couldn’t keep up with the number of new arrivals.

Dybala would have been the tip of the iceberg and landing home was always likely to be a long shot. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Forest made a call about the Argentinean, although it was quickly evident that a deal would be impossible.

It was to be Jose Mourinho that would win the race to land the little magician. Dybala had left Juventus at the end of the 2022/23 campaign and the Roma boss was keen to keep him in Serie A.

Interestingly, Tottenham tried desperately to sign the versatile forward when Mourinho was in charge. They fell at the final hurdle with the deal falling through over complications over his image rights.

The Portuguese incumbent might have hit the jackpot with Dybala. Last night he was bang in form as Roma secured a 2-1 win, with the 28-year-old scoring one and setting the other up.

Dybala showcased quality and Forest were always dreaming

The man with 34 caps for Argentina had made a fine start to life in the Italian capital. He has now scored three goals and claimed two assists during his time at his new club.

Forest would have dearly welcomed a player like Dybala in their ranks. It’s fair to say that they were always dreaming by aiming to complete such a signing, however.

Last night Dybala was at the heart of the action. He missed a good chance early doors when it looked easier to score but then fired home a long-range effort to give Roma the lead.

With 19 minutes remaining, Dybala turned orchestrator. Some night work on the right saw him cut back onto his left and curl a delicious ball into the path of Tammy Abraham who couldn’t miss from close range.

Forest added some quality players to their ranks during the summer. It would appear that Evangelos Marinakis showcased a massive amount of ambition though and Dybala would have been an amazing signing.
