They say you should never fall in love with a loan player but Nottingham Forest fans fell head over heels for Djed Spence.

The player joined from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2021 and he quickly established himself in the team.

It was when Steve Cooper took charge that the player started to shine, with Spence thriving in a right-sided wing-back role.

The 22-year-old was unbelievable at times. He proved instrumental in the club’s charge to promotion and fans wanted him permanently.

Spence had other ideas though. He had his head turned by Tottenham in January and for a little while it was thought they might buy him then.

In fairness to the defender, his form never dipped. It did, however, seem to end any talk of Spence returning to the City Ground this season.

The talented youngster bought into the culture at Forest. His family were often spotted at games and he seemed to care deeply about the Reds.

Few could deny him the chance to sign for Tottenham. They’re a Champions League outfit and challenge for the top four every season.

His Spurs dream has quickly turned into a nightmare, however. Antonio Conte seemingly sees him as one for the future and has no interest in giving him a chance.

He’s made just six appearances for the club and is yet to make his first start since signing for £20 million.

Forest fell in love with Spence but they have to let it go

Spence was called ‘unbelievable’ by Ian Wright last season and he was vital as the Reds won promotion.

He made 46 appearances for the Reds during 2021/22 and was impressive in a large amount of those games.

Now, the obsession from Forest fans is becoming tiresome. Every time Spence is spotted on a bench looking glum, someone asks the question, ‘Would you have Spence back at Forest?’.

It’s becoming an obsession. Forest, however, have moved on and so did Spence.

The Reds added Serge Aurier on a free transfer in the summer and he’s arguably been Forest’s best player this season.

Forest also have Neco Williams and at £17 million, it seems likely that he will play an important part in the club’s future.

Spence is a quality player but this is the old situation of someone making their bed and now needing to lie in it.

The player could be an option for the Reds in the future – that goes without saying.

Right now, Aurier is in the form of his life and perhaps some fans would be wise to cool the constant pining for Spence.
