Nottingham Forest were linked with a move for Rafa Benitez in October, with Steve Cooper under pressure. Now, the Reds could indirectly help the Spaniard land a new position in the Premier League.

Benitez hasn’t worked in England since a failed spell as the manager of Everton. He managed just 22 games at Goodison Park, leaving with a win percentage of 31% and just seven victories.

The manager has enjoyed a colourful managerial career with several clubs. He won the La Liga title with Valencia and also lifted European titles with Liverpool and Chelsea.

There is a sense that his spell with Everton has stopped clubs from appointing him. With that in mind, when he was linked with the Forest job in October it was met with angst from the fan base.

Ultimately, the club listened to their concerns too. No sooner had he been linked with a move to the City Ground, the club had backed down and handed Steve Cooper a new three-year contract.

Now, Forest could help Benitez get back into football. It’s claimed that he wants the West Ham United job, according to the Daily Mail, and the Hammers will sack David Moyes if his team loses to Forest on Saturday.

The Reds travel to the London Stadium for the first time at the weekend. Forest will hope to start picking up points away from home as they bid to stay in the Premier League this season.

The Reds have a huge opportunity this weekend. West Ham aren’t playing particularly well and a defeat to Tottenham at the weekend, they have dropped into the relegation zone.

Forest have a real chance to put clear daylight between them and the Hammers in the Premier League. It would take a massive performance from Cooper’s men but a win would be huge.

Benitez is unlikely to be a popular appointment for West Ham. They will want a statement manager to be appointed if Moyes leaves and the Spaniard is unlikely to meet that criteria.

Forest fans will simply be thankful that their house is in order now. Benitez was a dreadful link back in October and it would be ironic if he ends up back in the Premier League on the back of Forest beating West Ham.
