Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has backed Brennan Johnson to get even better. The forward scored twice on Sunday as the Reds came from behind to draw against Everton.

The 21-year-old took his tally for the campaign to nine goals. His first saw him tap home from close range after a Morgan Gibbs-White effort was saved and his second was just sublime.

After some neat build-up play between Gibbs-White and Ryan Yates, Johnson found himself unmarked in the penalty area. He opened his body and put an unstoppable effort into Pickford’s top corner.

Johnson has been magnificent of late. Since the World Cup in Qatar, the youngster has returned with a real point to prove and recently he’s helped Forest win some massive points.

Cooper is delighted with his forward. He thinks he could get even better in the future and thinks his form is definitely going in the right direction.

He told Metro: “I don’t mind talking about it because I see him every day and he only wants to get better, so he won’t get too high or too low. There’s always another level to get to but I’m sure he’s on an upward curve.

“He took a bit of a rocky road before the World Cup break but that was always going to happen. He’s performing well and he’s getting good numbers.

“We’re really pleased with Bren. He’s a local boy. So, it’s great to see him banging a few in.”

The Reds incumbent is right when he says he sees him every day. He’s also right when he backs him to get even better and Johnson is almost certainly a star in the making.

After 19 goals for the Reds during last season more was expected from the off during 2022/23. Since the World Cup, however, he’s really kicked on and is now showcasing his class.

There is definitely more to come from Johnson. Hopefully, he can stay in this consistent form and fire Forest to Premier League safety over the coming months.

The Reds’ forward is very much one of their own. He cares deeply about the club he calls his own and right now, he’s arguably the first name on the team sheet.
