Nottingham Forest were linked with appointing Craig Mulholland last month and now he’s announced he will leave Rangers. The Reds recently appointed Ross Wilson from the Ibrox giants as their new Chief Football Officer.
Forest were forced to make a quick appointment last month. Filippo Giraldi was surprisingly sacked after just six months in his role and it left Evangelos Marinakis with a void to fill.
Wilson has quite a bit of experience for someone who is only 39-years-old. He’s worked in roles behind the scenes at Falkirk, Huddersfield, Southampton and most recently at Rangers.
Football Insider claimed last month that Wilson was keep to appoint Mulholland. He has worked as the Academy Director at the Ibrox-based club for some time.
The figure has been with the club since 2003 in some capacity. He’s held coaching roles at the club and has been a spearhead behind their successful academy.
Now, however, the club have confirmed on their official website that he’s decided to leave the Gers.
Forest could find themselves on the lookout for some new appointments within their academy. Gary Brazil hasn’t signed a new contract just yet and surely Wilson will be trying to keep him in some capacity.
Warren Joyce is another man who has yet to sign a deal on Trentside. He began the campaign in charge of the under-18s but took over as the under-21 manager when Dave Rogers left.
Forest now have clear path to appoint Mulholland
It’s not clear at this stage what Wilson will actually be responsible for. What is telling is that he’s been given a different job title to that of Giraldi who he has replaced.
This latest report perhaps suggests that he’s going to be looking at the staff in place at Forest. That wouldn’t be a bad thing as some structure behind the scenes can only help.
Mulholland would be welcomed as someone who works well alongside Wilson. However, his appointment shouldn’t come at the expense of Brazil who deserves the chance to stay at Forest.
Rangers have a proud history with their academy. They’ve produced some fine players down the years and together with Brazil, Mulholland could complete a real force at the Forest Academy.
It’s perhaps telling that Rangers have released an extensive statement on Mulholland. That hardly smacks of him not being popular at Ibrox and he could prove a good appointment for Forest.
