Nottingham Forest goalkeeper George Shelvey has reacted after signing a new contract at the City Ground.

The stopper was due to leave the club in the summer but he’s now been handed a one-year extension.

Shelvey has been given another 12 months with the club holding the option to extend it by another year.

The goalkeeper has found himself in and around the senior squad at Forest during 2022/23.

He was on the bench for a couple of Carabao Cup fixtures and also away at Tottenham in the Premier League.

Shelvey has now put pen-to-paper on a new contract and after doing so he’s reacted on the club’s official website.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign this new deal with the club and would like to thank the supporter from the staff, players, my family and of course the fans.

“The next chapter is very exciting for me and for everyone close to me and I can’t wait to keep pushing forwards.

“We have a massive few weeks coming up and our focus is on keeping this amazing club where it belongs and pushing on again next season.”

This looks like a really positive step and Shelvey will likely take on the role vacated by Jordan Smith.

Shelvey is a player who could still improve and Forest are wise to tie him down to another contract.

The 22-year-old is someone who could produce the goods for Forest should he earn a chance in the team.

Shelvey has got some men’s football under his belt, with the player spending the 2021/22 campaign at Mansfield Town.

Now, he will hope to keep working hard at Forest and hopefully get himself a chance in the coming season or so.

Both Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas could leave in the summer and a new stopper will be a must.

Shelvey sticking around will at least provide some competition to the squad.
