Nottingham Forest transfer news: Reds linked with Carlos Augusto as Renan Lodi alternative

Nottingham Forest are targeting a move for Monza defender Carlos Augusto as a new left-back for Steve Cooper’s team. Newcastle were linked with a move earlier this year and the player won’t be short of suitors.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds are getting contingency plans in place. Forest would love to re-sign Renan Lodi this summer but a move to sign him once again seems somewhat complicated.

Augusto has a contract with Monza but only for another year. As a result, the Serie A outfit are desperately trying to get him to sign a new one with them.

His form, however, has promoted clubs to show an interest. During the 2022/23 campaign, he scored six goals and registered five assists as Monza finished in a decent 11th place.

Augusto has been with the Italian outfit since 2020. He checked in from Corinthians and has grown as a player since starting on his European adventure.

Forest will almost certainly need to sign a left-back this summer. Harry Toffolo was the backup to Lodi last season, with Omar Richards set to return for pre-season training.

Cooper will go in search of an attacking full-back if he can’t get Lodi again. Augusto has largely played as a wing-back for Monza and he looks to fit that criteria nicely.

Forest targeting move for Augusto but Newcastle are in the background

This deal wouldn’t be a particularly expensive one. It’s claimed that Monza will demand around £8 million should they decide to sell him during the transfer window, with much depending on whether or not he will sign a new deal.

Newcastle’s interest could make it complicated though. They have Champions League football on the table next season and ultimately if it’s a choice between the Magpies or Forest, it’s a no-brainer.

Monza boss Raffaele Palladino is a huge fan of Augusto. He called him ‘extraordinary’ back in April and it appears that he’s set for a bright future.

Rumour rating: 8/10 – There seems a lot to like about this deal. Augusto is only 24-years-old and much like Lodi he’s a player who fits the brief of playing as a wing-back.

He was seen as a bit of a breakout star in Serie A this season and he won’t break the bank. Taking everything into consideration, we think Augusto would represent a sound alternative to Lodi.
