Nottingham Forest confirmed signings, transfers in and out, loan exits, releases for 2023/24

Nottingham Forest are back to work in the transfer window after successfully retaining their Premier League status. So, keep up to date on boss Steve Cooper’s confirmed signings here.

The City Ground natives were the fifth-largest spenders in the Premier League last summer with an outlay of £157.5m. Cooper had to almost entirely rebuild Nottingham Forest’s first-team squad upon securing their promotion to the top-flight via the Championship play-offs.

A further £16m and a handful of free transfers took Nottingham Forest’s confirmed signings for 2022/23 to 30 players. Cooper may hope he is not as busy this summer. But Nottingham Forest must move in the market, so keep up to date on all of their confirmed signings here…

All of Nottingham Forest’s confirmed transfers in

Chris Wood – Nottingham Forest have completed the permanent signing of the New Zeeland striker from Newcastle United. The Reds and Magpies agreed to insert a £15m clause in the terms of his loan transfer secured in January. He activated the clause after just three games.

Ola Aina – Cooper only sealed Nottingham Forest’s first new signing of the summer sales on July 22. The Reds signed the 26-year-old to a one-year contract with optional extra years as a free agent. He had left Serie A side Torino in June after making 19 appearances over 22/23.

Anthony Elanga – Manchester United sold the 21-year-old to Nottingham Forest for £15m on July 25. The forward agreed to a five-year contract to seal his switch to the City Ground after eight years at Old Trafford. The Red Devils product hit four goals and assists over 55 games.

Matt Turner – Arsenal agreed to sell the 29-year-old to Nottingham Forest for an initial £7m, rising to £10m, on August 9. The USA international moved to the City Ground on a four-year contract after one season at Emirates Stadium. He only played seven games for Mikel Arteta.

Gonzalo Montiel – Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of the World Cup-winning right-back on loan from Sevilla on August 23. The Reds’ move for the 26-year-old also includes an €11m (£9.5m) option to buy. He converted Argentina’s last penalty in the final at Qatar 2022.

Andrey Santos – Nottingham Forest announced the arrival of the 19-year-old on loan from Chelsea on August 25. The Brazilian midfielder moved to the City Ground on a season-long deal for his first taste of English football. He left Vasco da Gama for the Blues this summer.

Will Swan – Mansfield Town confirmed the signing of the striker from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee on May 17. The 22-year-old agreed to a three-year contract with the EFL League Two team after spending 2022/23 on loan and ending the season as their top scorer.

Sam Surridge – MLS outfit Nashville SC announced the £5m transfer of the 24-year-old from Nottingham Forest on July 25. The striker had earlier confirmed that he was leaving the Reds in an emotional Instagram post. He struck 11 goals in 50 games after joining in January 2022.

Braian Ojeda – Real Salt Lake secured a permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest for the 23-year-old on August 1. The Paraguay midfielder had been on loan with the MLS franchise for the past year. He played 34 times for Real Salt Lake before securing a permanent switch.

Steve Cook – Queens Park Rangers secured the signing of the 32-year-old from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee on August 9. The Rs had missed out on the centre-back to the Reds in January 2022. He then helped Forest seal promotion and played a total of 34 games.

Tyrese Fornah – Derby County signed the 23-year-old from Nottingham Forest on August 25 for an undisclosed fee. The midfielder moved to Pride Park on a two-year contract after five years with the Reds. He played four first-team games with Forest between a flurry of loans.

Every player Nottingham Forest have sent out on loan

Dale Taylor – Wycombe Wanderers confirmed a season-long loan transfer for the 19-year-old from Nottingham Forest on July 23. The striker spent the second half of the 22/23 term on loan at Burton Albion. He offered five goals in 20 League One games in his first loan deal.

Fin Back – Carlisle United confirmed the temporary return to Brunton Park from Nottingham Forest of the 20-year-old on July 24. He had spent the 22/23 season at the Cumbrians and made 19 appearances there. The right-back returned in a second season-long loan transfer.

Oli Hammond – Cheltenham Town hired the 20-year-old on loan from Nottingham Forest for the season on August 1. The deal is the central midfielder’s first loan move away from the Reds in his career. He joined their academy aged eight and has played three senior games.

Josh Bowler – Cardiff City announced the arrival of the 24-year-old on loan from Nottingham Forest for the season on August 1. The forward signed for the Reds in 2022 before spending last term on loan to Olympiacos and Blackpool. He scored four goals in 33 games in 22/23.

Richie Laryea – Vancouver Whitecaps and Nottingham Forest agreed a loan transfer for the 28-year-old on August 2. The Canada right-back moved to the MLS franchise until the end of 2023 after spending the last year at Toronto FC. He has only played five times for Forest.

Gustavo Scarpa – Olympiacos sealed the arrival of the 29-year-old on loan from Nottingham Forest for the 2023/24 season on August 18. The attacking midfielder moved to Greece after 10 appearances for the Reds. He had moved to the City Ground from Palmeiras this January.

Omar Richards – Olympiacos returned to the City Ground on August 25 to secure a season-long loan deal for the 25-year-old. The left-back only joined Nottingham Forest in July 2022 from Bayern Munich. But he failed to feature under Cooper in his first year back in England.

Lewis O’Brien – Middlesbrough sealed the signing of the 24-year-old on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest on August 31. He quit Huddersfield Town for the Reds in July 2022. But the midfielder only appeared 17 times before joining DC United on loan in March 2023.

Every player Nottingham Forest have released in 2023

Andre Ayew – Nottingham Forest announced their released and retained list for the 2023/24 campaign on June 2. The Reds confirmed that Ayew was one of six senior players leaving the City Ground at the end of their contracts. He only joined the club as a free agent in February.

Cafu – Cooper released the 30-year-old at the end of his contract having only played twice in 22/23. He further only fielded the midfielder once for six minutes in the Premier League in August. Cafu did not make another league matchday squad and joined Rotherham on July 8.

Jack Colback – The Reds axed the 33-year-old after only playing 11 Premier League fixtures in 2022/23. He further only started in four games and did not feature beyond March 5. Colback left the City Ground after 134 appearances and signed for Queens Park Rangers on August 1.

Jesse Lingard – Nottingham Forest signed the England maestro to a £115k-a-week contract following his release by Manchester United in July 2022. But the 30-year-old only featured in 17 Premier League games under Cooper. He also failed to score or lay on an assist for Forest.

Jordan Smith – Cooper has opted to release the Nottingham Forest product at the end of his contract. The 28-year-old joined the Reds back in 2001 but only made 54 first-team outings.

Lyle Taylor – The 33-year-old left Nottingham Forest after three years having only registered eight goals in 61 games across all competitions. He also did not play once through 2022/23.

Every academy player Nottingham Forest have released in 2023

Billy Fewster – The City Ground natives also announced in their released and retained list for the 2023/24 season that six of Nottingham Forest’s academy players will leave at the end of their contracts. The Reds only signed Fester for their U21s in 2021 after he left Leeds United.

Alex Gibson-Hammond – Cooper has released the Nottingham Forest product having never given the midfielder his senior debut. The 20-year-old had spent his entire career at Forest.

Ryan Hammond – Nottingham Forest released the 19-year-old after just a season. He signed for the Reds in July 2022 from Millwall’s academy but struggled to establish his place there.

Nicky Hogarth – Falkirk secured the signing of the goalkeeper on June 12 after Nottingham Forest released the 21-year-old. The move marked a homecoming for the Scotland U21 gem. He also played in 17 games for the Bairns on loan during the first half of the 2022/23 season.

Adnan Kanuric – Cooper has released the goalkeeper only one year after Nottingham Forest confirmed his signing. The Bosnia U21 talent joined the Reds from FK Sarajevo in September 2022. He later joined Oxford City on loan in February 2023 after failing to establish his role.

Lewis Salmon – Alfreton Town confirmed the signing of the centre-forward on May 30 after Nottingham Forest released him. The 21-year-old had played for the National League North side on loan in 2022. He also spent the latter half of the 2022/23 term with Telford United.

Dean Henderson – The England goalkeeper has returned to Manchester United following a season-long loan to Nottingham Forest. But The Athletic reported in June that the Reds are in negotiations over a permanent transfer. The Red Devils are looking for £25m to cash in.

Keylor Navas – The 36-year-old has returned to Paris Saint-Germain following the expiration of a short-term loan. Nottingham Forest signed the goalkeeper in January as an emergency addition. 90min also reported in June that Forest explored retaining the Costa Rican veteran.

Renan Lodi – Nottingham Forest confirmed in August 2022 the term-long loan signing of the left-back from Atletico Madrid for £5m. But the Reds baulked at triggering their £25m option to buy the Brazilian. He played in 28 Premier League fixtures as Cooper’s first-choice starter.

Every academy player Nottingham Forest have signed

Will Brook – Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of the 19-year-old for their academy on June 29. The goalkeeper joined the Reds following the end of his contract with Leeds. He spent several years with the Whites and won promotion to the Premier League 2 Division 1.

Harry Griffiths – Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of the 18-year-old goalkeeper for their academy on June 29. The Reds secured his signature from AFC Wimbledon, where the Pembury native made a first-team squad on five occasions in 2022/23 but without playing.

Manni Norkett – Nottingham Forest secured the 18-year-old’s return to the club on June 29 after signing from Manchester United. The striker had initially left his hometown Reds to join the Red Devils’ academy. Norkett also went on to produce a prolific record at the U18 level.

Alfie Bradshaw – Nottingham Forest announced the arrival of the attacking midfielder from Bradford City on August 23. The 16-year-old agreed to join the Reds on an initial scholarship but will get professional terms until 2026 in September. He is a product of Bradford’s ranks.
