Nottingham Forest are closing in on a move to sign Nicolas Dominguez from Bologna.

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor has confirmed that the deal to sign the 25-year-old midfielder is ‘progressing nicely’.

Steve Cooper’s side have been in talks with the Italian side for a swap deal that will see Remo Freuler leave the City Ground, with Argentinian Dominguez joining the Reds.

The 31-year-old Swiss international has yet to make an appearance for the Reds this season, with Freuler free to leave the club this window.

As for Dominguez, the 25-year-old has one year left on his deal at Bologna, with the midfielder stating his desire to leave the club for a new challenge.

Nicolas Dominguez edging closer to Nottingham Forest move

It would be a good move for all parties if Forest could offload the Freuler. He’s a talented footballer, but unfortunately for him, he doesn’t suit the system that Steve Cooper wants to deploy and a move to Bologna is edging ever closer.

Dominguez coming the other way is an excellent piece of business from the Reds.

The Argentinian, who has been capped 11 times for his nation, has been linked with moves to sides such as Galatasaray who will be competing in the Champions League next season.

At 25, he has bags of time to improve and he will certainly provide an upgrade on Freuler who is going in the other direction.

Unlike with Freuler, Cooper must find a way of playing that gets the very best out of Dominguez at Forest. If he does that, the Reds could be in for a very good season indeed.
