Nottingham Forest did hold talks with Renan Lodi over a permanent move to the City Ground in the summer. The Reds had the left-back on loan last season and Atletico Madrid deemed him surplus to requirements upon his return.

According to The Athletic, Forest tried extremely hard to sign Lodi on a permanent deal. It’s claimed that talks did take place, although the lure of Champions League football with Marseille proved hard for him to resist.

Lodi was a key part of the team that secured Premier League survival on the penultimate day of the 2022/23 campaign. He was in tears on the pitch at the end of the contest and it seemed as though the player might fancy a return.

The Reds couldn’t get a deal over the line though. Lodi saw his future away from Forest and in the end, the chance to play European football proved too strong for the defender to turn down.

Lodi was the regular in the left-back role last season. He made 34 appearances for Forest and the fans grew to love him once he settled following a slow start to his time in England.

He was a fantastic player for the club and Forest have had to go out and replace him. Ola Aina has signed for the club on a free, with Nuno Tavares also arriving on loan from Arsenal.

Lodi would have been a tremendous signing for Forest. He’s quickly become a regular in the team at Marseille and now both parties have moved on from last season.
