David Johnson has explained what was strange about watching Brennan Johnson in his first game since leaving Nottingham Forest for Tottenham this summer.
The Reds chose to cash in on the academy graduate, with Tottenham paying £47.5 million for his services. Forest chose to sell to aid their Financial Fair Play case and Johnson went with the club’s best wishes.

The 22-year-old’s departure sparked a flurry of signings at the City Ground. Ibrahim Sangare was the main signing, with six others also checking in on transfer deadline day.
Johnson left Forest for Tottenham during the summer
It must have been a strange time for the Nottingham-born player and his family. All that Brennan has ever known is Forest and moving to Tottenham can’t have been easy.
For the family, it’s proved a strange situation. They’re used to watching the youngster turn out just minutes from their house and now he’s strutting his stuff in London.
Speaking to Team Talk on Notts TV, Johnson said: “It’s very difficult for us as a family who used to walk to games and now when he’s having his media day and he turned up in a white kit it’s very strange.
“When we turned up on the Saturday he made his debut and seeing him in a different kit, we don’t know the songs, we just kind of sit there twiddling our thumbs and just hoping they win.
“It’s a big change for us but for him, I think it was the right time. It was the right time for him and the right time for the club and I think that’s the reason why people have wished him all the best.”
Forest have moved on from big summer sale
Now isn’t the time to be looking backwards. Johnson leaving allowed Forest to complete their own summer transfer business and the Reds will hope to kick on now.

Steve Cooper was a huge fan of Brennan. He gave him the platform to play regular football and this is another example of the Forest head coach working wonders with a young talent.
Johnson scored 19 goals in 2021/22 and grabbed a further eight last season. Replacing those goals won’t be easy but now someone else within the Forest ranks has to step up.
