Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood has been recognised for his weekend performance by Alan Shearer. The pundit has named him in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Wood left Shearer’s beloved Newcastle United in the January transfer window to sign for Forest. After an initial loan deal, the 31-year-old signed permanent terms on a £15 million transfer in the summer.

Wood has been in pretty decent form when he’s been called upon this season. He’s returned from an injury looking fitter, sharper and stronger, adding three goals to his Forest total.

Wood named in Team of the Week

Wood came up trumps for Forest when it mattered at the weekend. His first goal saw him finish brilliantly after going through one-on-one and his second was a trademark header.

Shearer was impressed with Forest star Wood. He told the Premier League’s official website: “Led the line well with two goals, and so nearly a hat trick. This is the type of performance Forest will be needing from their forward.”

Wood is only in the Forest team after Taiwo Awoniyi picked up an injury that ruled him out for a month. He is edging back towards fitness and this showing from the striker proved a timely boost for the New Zealand international.

Forest striker Wood has a role to play this season

When Awoniyi is available once again, it seems pretty clear that he will return to the team. He’s integral to the way in which Forest like to play and remains a big player.

Still, Wood will definitely have a big role to play at Forest this season. He will be the second in command to lead the line and when he does get a chance all he can do is score goals.

On Saturday, Wood should have been on a winning Forest side. He was unfortunate not to grab himself a hat-trick but he will take a lot of confidence from the outing.
