Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner made a huge mistake on Sunday, according to Reds legend Garry Birtles. Forest were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool at Anfield to slide down the Premier League.
Turner signed for Forest in the summer after checking in from Arsenal for £7 million. He has been ever-present during 2023/24 but on Sunday he made the biggest error he’s made in the Garibaldi.
After a long ball from Dominic Szoboszlai, Turner rushed out of his penalty area but the Forest man made a complete hash of his clearance, allowing Mohamed Salah to tap into an empty net.
Birtles thought Turner was at fault for third Forest goal
Birtles saw it all pretty much throughout his playing career. He won the European Cup with Forest and also played for Manchester United and England throughout his career as a player.
As a football pundit, he’s respected and he was asked to sum up the error that Turner made on Sunday. He feels that he’s made a mistake but the key now will be whether or not he can learn from it.

The Forest legend told The Garibaldi Red Podcast: “When I was playing as a centre-half, I always wanted a massive shout from the goalkeeper. Those things happen sometimes, you can get those goals that can look a little bit comical but it didn’t impact the game in terms of the way we played and all that. Sometimes you’ve got to say it’s just one of those things.
“As long as you learn from the mistakes you make, that’s the problem at times, maybe we’ve not learned. If Forest can cut those out we’ve got a chance to jump up the table.”
Turner might not get chance to learn from mistake
Steve Cooper now has a conundrum this weekend. Does he stick with the fumbling Turner or does he go with Greece’s number one Odysseas Vlachodimos?
If he makes the latter choice, Turner could be in trouble at Forest. Vlachodimos is very experienced and a Greek journalist called him ‘brilliant’ on Sunday.
The 29-year-old will be desperate to get a chance at Forest. He’s now been given that opportunity since he arrived on transfer deadline day but he could now be in line for a start on Sunday.
