A reputable Brazilian journalist has explained that Palmeiras simply can’t afford to sign Gustavo Scarpa from Nottingham Forest. The player is currently on loan with Olympiacos but is struggling for regular game time.
Scarpa signed for Forest in January 2023 after agreeing terms with the club some months before. He chose to see out the season in Brazil and helped Palmeiras to the league title and also won the Golden Ball as the division’s best player.
Scarpa joining Forest didn’t go according to plan. Although Ian Wright praised him after a 2-0 win over Leicester, he made just 10 appearances and failed to register a single-goal contribution.
Journalist says Palmeiras can’t afford Scarpa
It was reported earlier this week that the £30,000-a-week that Scarpa earns at Forest has already put Sao Paulo off. Now, the club that saw the very best of him, Palmeiras, have similar concerns it would seem.

UOL journalist Paulo Vinicius Coelho explained in his latest UOL piece: “The next question is: Does Scarpa want to come back? I haven’t had that answer, but if you have a negotiation, from Palmeiras’ point of view, it’s more or less clear that the club can’t afford to make a heavy investment in a player who is going to be 30 next. To bring him back spending big on a signing, but if it’s on loan, yes.”
Forest forward Scarpa could be set for limbo
It does look as though the player’s dream of conquering Europe is about to end. For Scarpa, it looks tricky for him to get another club if he can’t force his way into the reckoning on a more frequent basis with Olympiacos after his Forest debacle.
Still, he’s given it a good go. Some personal issues to sort out and injuries didn’t help Scarpa at Forest. He did, however, seem like a good character and there was no animosity when he left in the summer.
Hopefully, Forest forward Scarpa can get something sorted. He deserves a club to take a chance on him and if he does head back to Brazil, he should be capable of flying once again.
