Billy Davies has spoken in an interview about his time at Nottingham Forest, nine years after his departure from the City Ground.

In his interview with Unsung Sport, the now 59-year-old raved about current Notts County striker David McGoldrick – after working with the forward during his time at Forest.

McGoldrick, now aged 35, joined the Reds for £1 million back in June 2009, signing a four-year deal at the City Ground.

The striker went on to play 63 times for the club, scoring eight times before a permanent move to Ipswich Town which saw him become a lethal Championship forward.

Billy Davies on managing David McGoldrick

Former Reds and Derby County boss Davies was quizzed about the three most underrated players that he managed at each club, with the Scotsman choosing McGoldrick as one of his Forest selections.

“David McGoldrick was a player that I greatly admired for his ability.

“His movement on and off the ball, plus his football brain was first-class.”

McGoldrick left the Reds before Davies was dismissed during his second stint at the Reds. His second spell was a disappointing one, with the former Derby boss sacked after a 5-0 defeat against the Rams at Pride Park.

McGoldrick never really had a chance to shine at Forest

Although he’s known for his brilliant goalscoring abilities these days, the Nottingham-born striker failed to make a real name for himself at the City Ground.

Whether it was through mismanagement, or playing for the Reds before his prime, McGoldrick failed to make a real impact at the club. However, ever since being at clubs such as Ipswich and Derby, he’s been recognised as a clinical striker.

The forward returned to boyhood club Notts County this summer, as he looks to help them secure back-to-back promotions to League One under boss Luke Williams.
