Nottingham Forest can’t let Premier League rivals land Brazilian wonderkid in January – Opinion

Nottingham Forest should target Santos striker Marcos Leonardo once again in January after missing out on the Brazilian in the summer.

Steve Cooper’s side were interested in signing the 20-year-old back in August, but a move never materialised.

Should Forest want to pursue a move for Leonardo, the club would face tough competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United who want to sign the Brazilian U20 international.

Santos have struggled in the Brazilian Serie A this season, but Leonardo has scored 13 goals in 25 appearances – with a £25 million price tag being touted.

Leonardo would add more quality to the Forest frontline

The striker made his first-team debut for the Brazilian club three years ago, aged 17, and has since played 122 times scoring 43 goals in all competitions.

His goalscoring record for a youngster speaks for itself, with rumours about a big European move no real surprise.

Anthony Elanga has been impressive since his arrival from Manchester United this summer, with his pace and direct running trouble for any opposition.

Callum Hudson-Odoi enjoyed a good start to life at the City Ground, but his latest injury has seen him miss the last couple of games, with a return expected after the international break.

Another forward needed at Forest?

With Chris Wood out of contract at the end of the season and currently joining Divock Origi on the injury list another striker may need to be on Forest’s shopping list.

Main striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be missing for a couple of weeks during January for the African Cup of Nations, leaving the Reds with two central options.

Leonardo could be a great player to fill that void, whilst also being a great investment for the future with the Brazilian being only 20.

With Forest’s success rate of signing Brazilian talents, a move for the wonderkid should be considered in January.
