Nottingham Forest defender Gonzalo Montiel has been spotted in training after over a month out with a calf injury suffered on international duty.

The 26-year-old picked up the problem playing for Argentina against Peru during the last international break.

Boss Steve Cooper hasn’t put a timescale on his return to first-team action for the Reds, with Montiel not playing for the club since the 7th of October against Crystal Palace.

However, Montiel was spotted in a training video this morning, with the right-back seemingly edging ever closer to a return from injury.

Montiel edging closer to Forest return

Montiel, who has won 23 caps for Argentina, has only featured five times for Cooper since his arrival in the summer, with the Argentinian only starting two games for the club.

The right-back joined the Reds during the summer window on a season-long loan from Sevilla, with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

He may be edging closer to a first-team return, however, Montiel may need to be patient for an opportunity in the starting eleven.

In his absence, Ola Aina and Harry Toffolo have both been superb, with the pair looking undroppable as it stands.

Montiel will come good at Forest

Although he’s not had the easiest start to life at the City Ground, the injury layoff may have been a good thing for Montiel as he adapts to life in Nottingham.

He joined the club with a whole wealth of experience, winning the World Cup and Europa League last season – you don’t achieve that unless you have some quality about you.

He’ll certainly be a hit for the Reds but may need to wait until January for a proper run in the side when the likes of Aina, Serge Aurier and Moussa Niakhate are featuring at AFCON for their respective nations.
