Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has been backed as the club’s Player of the Season so far by a local journalist.

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor made the claim about the 26-year-old in the latest column where each Premier League club’s best player was revealed by their respective correspondents.

Awoniyi, who has four Premier League goals this season, is Forest’s top goal scorer closely followed by fellow striker Chris Wood on three.

The striker has also missed a couple of games through injury so far this campaign, with the Nigerian’s presence greatly missed up top.

The Reds’ Athletic correspondent spoke in detail about the striker, praising him for his impact this season.

“It is tempting to say Murillo, whose impact has been explosive in his short time in England, but Taiwo Awoniyi remains Forest’s most important player.

“The Nigerian brings more than just a physical presence up front, he links up play, provides an outlet and is a constant attacking threat.

“When he has missed games through injury, it has merely served to underline his importance.

“He has delivered two assists and four goals and, even with Chris Wood and Divock Origi returning from injury, Awoniyi will continue to be a vital cog in the Forest machine.”

Awoniyi key for Forest

The Nigerian has started the last two games for Steve Cooper’s side after overcoming his groin injury, however, despite scoring against West Ham on Sunday, he’s no way near fully fit.

Despite being selected for the Nigeria squad during this international break, hopefully, the 26-year-old can be given some time to recuperate ahead of the return of the Premier League.

No disrespect to Wood or Origi, but Awoniyi is a level above the pair and he must start when Forest return to action in a couple of weeks.
