£50k-a-week Forest star shouldn’t be offered a new contract this summer

Nottingham Forest defender Serge Aurier has been a brilliant addition since his free transfer last summer after his release from Villarreal.

He originally joined Steve Cooper’s side on a one-year deal, before signing another one-year extension in the summer, taking him until 2024.

However, Aurier hasn’t featured as much as last season, with new signing Ola Aina impressing at right-back in recent weeks.

The Ivorian, now aged 30 may have lost his place for good with Aina consistently starting ahead of the former Tottenham man.

No new deal for Serge Aurier

Although he’s been a key man for the Reds since promotion back to the Premier League, the defender who is reportedly on £50k-a-week has fallen down the pecking order.

With the defender the oldest of four options at right-back it may be time for the club to move the defender on.

Undoubtedly, it would be a huge call and one that would cause a divide among supporters, however, he’s failed to reach the levels he achieved in order to get a new deal.

He’s been prone to a mistake in recent times, with the error for Luton Town’s first goal the one that immediately springs to mind.

A very tough call on Aurier

Aurier has proved a shrewd signing. He didn’t cost a transfer fee and ultimately, the recruitment team at Forest did a wonderful job by persuading him to come to the City Ground.

However, this season the fans are yet to see the qualities they know he possesses – with Aina seemingly ahead of him in the right-back department.

He’s within Cooper’s six-man leadership group at the club, however, the time might be right for the defender to leave after continued speculation about a move to Saudi Arabia.
