TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has this morning delivered an update on the future of Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper. The Reds incumbent oversaw a 1-1 draw with Wolves at the weekend.
Cooper has come under pressure over the last week or so. Forest have won just once in the last 12 games and were battered 5-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage last Wednesday.
Evangelos Marinakis was so disappointed with that performance that he tossed his matchday pass into a bush on the way out. It was an embarrassing performance and Cooper must have been left fearing the worst.
Crook delivers update on Forest boss Cooper
There is only one thing that will temper the current speculation that is rife on Trentside and that’s winning football matches. Tottenham are next up for Forest, with Bournemouth to come afterwards.
Crook has this morning been quizzed on the situation. He believes things are relatively calm right now but has claimed that Forest boss Cooper needs some quick wins to save himself.
He said live on TalkSPORT (12/12; 07:13am): “At the moment all is calm, it felt like a big week for Steve Cooper at Forest last week because we know the owner was deeply concerned about their run of form.
“It is only one win in 12 now but he made some big calls at the weekend, he made seven changes, he changed the formation and he got a response from his players and I think the owner watching on realises that. So, at the moment he’ll continue but it doesn’t get any easier.
“Tottenham on Friday, if they lose that one then I think he’ll be right back under the microscope and they’re actively looking for potential replacements.
“You’ve got (Julen) Lopetegui, who’s keen, the former Wolves manager to come back to the Premier League, you’ve got (Oliver) Glasner who’s been mentioned as well.
“I think Steve Cooper still needs some wins and quickly.”
Forest must fight once again on Friday
The Reds can’t rest on their morale-boosting point against Wolves. They simply have to keep their sleeves rolled up and continue to come out swinging for their manager.
Forest were excellent in the second half against Wolves on Saturday. In fairness, three points should have been claimed and on another day they might have been.
Cheikhou Kouyate and Harry Toffolo both missed gilt-edged chances; although the latter of those two did score his first goal for the club in the game.
Cooper deserves the backing of his players. He’s worked wonders on Trentside and he desperately needs the Forest team to turn up for him on Friday.
It promises to be a wonderful night under the City Ground lights and hopefully, Forest can end their long-standing winless run to help Cooper keep his job.
