Lewis McGugan thinks 22-year-old Nottingham Forest player has got so much worse

Lewis McGugan has criticised Nottingham Forest youngster Danilo for his performances so far this season. The Brazilian was a second-half substitute against Tottenham but once again he failed to have an impact.

Forest caught the eye when they landed Danilo from Palmeiras for £16 million back in January. As he comes towards his first year at the City Ground, it would appear that he’s gone full circle.

When Danilo first arrived at Forest, the player struggled to adapt. However, after a spell on the sidelines, he produced some great performances as Forest secured their Premier League survival.

McGugan critiques Danilo after latest Forest display

It’s a fair assessment that McGugan has made about Danilo’s current Forest form. On Friday he came on at the expense of Nicolas Dominguez who was an unused substitute.

Danilo didn’t cover himself in glory during the Forest defeat. He hasn’t looked particularly great since he returned from a hamstring problem and McGugan has now echoed that sentiment.

The former Forest midfielder told the Forest Focus Podcast: “What’s happened to Danilo, I looked at him last season and the impact he made and he’s not playing up to his standard at the moment.

Danilo must shape up if he’s to get more minutes

The 22-year-old needs to get himself back in some kind of form if he’s to keep getting minutes for Forest. He’s looked way out of sorts since returning to the fold and hasn’t offered much at all.

Danilo is still a quality player for Forest but he’s clearly suffering a bit of a confidence crisis at the moment. He will be under no illusions that he needs to improve with other players now waiting in the wings.

With Dominguez and Ibrahim Sangare to come back into the fold, Danilo will be keen to ensure he keeps getting minutes. In fairness, he can offer something that those two can and clearly, Steve Cooper does fancy him.

He won’t keep getting minutes on reputation alone, however. McGugan is right to question Danilo for his recent Forest performances and hopefully, he can kick on over the Christmas period.
