Nottingham Forest sacked Steve Cooper yesterday and it’s now been explained who was handed the task of dismissing him. The 44-year-old has been replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground.
The new head coach has taken training for the first time today. It would appear that he’s handed everyone a clean sheet, with Forest outcasts Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna both spotted.
Cooper leaves the club after over two years in charge and with his reputation firmly intact. The head coach achieved miraculous things on Trentside and he will always be adored by the fan base.
Report explains who told Cooper he was sacked at Forest
It’s quite sad that Cooper has lost his job after such heroics in getting the team promoted against the odds. However, this is a results-based business and with one win in 13 games, it’s hard to say he was hard done by.
According to The Athletic, it wasn’t actually Evangelos Marinakis who let Cooper know that he’d been sacked. That responsibility went to the club’s Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson.

It doesn’t sound like a particularly pleasant thing to have to do. Wilson might see that as outside of remit but nonetheless, it was the Scottish key figure that informed Cooper.
Cooper leaves with head held high
It’s claimed further in the article that Cooper did get to shake hands with Marinakis before he departed the club. However, it does seem strange that it was left to Wilson to inform him of the news.
Cooper perhaps deserved better than that from the Forest hierarchy. He served the club with distinction and delivered something that no other manager had achieved for 23 years.
Wilson has come under fire from the supporters previously for a lack of transfers when things were moving slowly in the summer. However, this serves to prove that his role runs deeper than recruiting players.
