Nottingham Forest want Wolves ace as Nuno demands improvement

Nottingham Forest are again being linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Jose Sa as Nuno Espirito Santo weighs up his goalkeeping options.

Forest have gone through major goalkeeping changes in 2023.

Loanees Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas moved on, leaving Forest to bring in two new stoppers.

Matt Turner joined from Arsenal with Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos arriving from Benfica.

We are yet to see either of them shine, with Turner recently coming back into the side having lost his spot to Vlachodimos.

The chopping and changing isn’t ideal and Forest are now being linked with another goalkeeper…

Nottingham Forest linked with Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa

The Sun report that Forest are rivalling Saudi Arabian clubs in the race for Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Reports over the summer indicated that Forest were keen on Sa but ended up going in another direction.

It’s stated that the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo as Forest manager has now put Sa back on Forest’s wish list.

The natural idea here is to think that Nuno wants Sa having worked together at Wolves – but their timelines don’t match up.

Sa joined Wolves in the summer of 2021, weeks after Nuno had left the club and ended up at Tottenham Hotspur.

Nuno and Sa do have some history though having spent the 2016-17 season together at Porto.

Sa was a backup goalkeeper at that point but Nuno – a former goalkeeper himself – may well have seen the potential back then and tracked his progress at Wolves.

Wolves may well cash in on Sa having actually benched him earlier this season and have allegedly lined up Crystal Palace ace Sam Johnstone as a replacement.

Nuno comments on Forest goalkeeping situation

It looks like Turner will start in goal for Forest against Newcastle United today as Nuno has now commented on the situation.

Nuno has told the Daily Mail that everyone at Forest must improve – starting with the goalkeepers.

“I would be fair to tell you that Turner will be the goalkeeper, but at this moment it is about performance,” said Nuno. “Any decision that we are going to make is going to be based on the performance we want for our team. Every player has to improve, starting with our goalkeepers,” he added.

Nuno seemingly isn’t completely committed to Turner in the long term and may well switch to Vlachodimos if he feels it will improve Forest.

Nuno’s history as a goalkeeper in his playing days means he is likely to place a keen focus on this position, and if that means bringing in another goalkeeper – such as Sa – in January then so be it.

A big performance from Turner today would ease some of the concerns but we can’t rule out a goalkeeping addition when the transfer window opens.
