Nottingham Forest youngster Joe Gardner has claimed that he would have fancied taking a penalty during last night’s win over Bristol City.

The 18-year-old was speaking after the game to BBC Radio Nottingham.

So, what exactly did Gardner say after his debut for the senior Forest ranks? Let’s take a closer look…

Joe Gardner fancied Nottingham Forest penalty during shootout win

Well, it was a night that Gardner will never forget on Trentside as he replaced Gonzalo Montiel ahead of extra-time.

The Reds youngster came on at right wing-back and looked comfortable during the extra period.

Forest scored all five of their penalties during the shootout to edge home 5-3, with Gardner not taking one.

The B-Team graduate, however, has claimed that he would have fancied one had he been called upon.

Forest defender Gardner told BBC Radio Nottingham: “I was a bit nervous but getting that first tackle in just helped me settle and the fans were brilliant all game.

“The penalties were nerve-wracking but I probably would have backed myself to take one if it did get to me.

“I’ve just got to stay grounded keep working hard in training and hopefully more chances will come.”

Gardner may get more chances to shine this season

With Serge Aurier leaving the club for Galatasaray – and Montiel now possibly out injured – Gardner might find himself earning more chances to play.

Neco Williams would be the only option at right-back, with Ola Aina to come back in when he returns from the African Cup of Nations.

Gardner looked comfortable when he came onto the pitch for Forest last night and eased into things just nicely.

It’s quite remarkable that he’d have welcomed a penalty and perhaps that showcases the confidence that these boys are getting behind the scenes in the academy.

With Brennan Johnson and Joe Worrall sold during the last two transfer windows, Ryan Yates is the only evergreen academy graduate in the senior ranks.

In our view, Nuno Espirito Santo will be mindful of that and perhaps that will mean more appearances in the Forest squad for Gardner.
