Stephen Kelly has given his verdict on the controversial penalty decision that went against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League match against Newcastle United at the City Ground.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender and BBC Sport pundit thinks that Forest were wronged.

So, what has Stephen Kelly said about the controversial incident in the game between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United? Let’s take a look.

Nottingham Forest denied a penalty vs Newcastle United

Well, Nottingham Forest lost against Newcastle United at the City Ground in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Nuno’s side went down 3-2. Bruno Guimaraes scored twice for Newcastle, while Fabian Schar found the back of the net once for the visiting team.

Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi were the goalscorers for Forest, who are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Forest were denied two penalties. The second one was hugely controversial.

Towards the end of the first half, there was a light shove on Elanga by Anthony Gordon.

Then in the second half, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka’s outstretched arms brought down down Taiwo Awoniyi, a player Forest head coach Nuno thinks will be important for the team in the coming weeks.

BBC pundit Stephen Kelly’s verdict

It did look like a penalty, and although the match officials did not think so, former Tottenham defender and BBC Sport pundit Stephen Kelly was clear about it.

Kelly said on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra: “For me, it looks like Martin Dubravka takes Taiwo Awoniyi out. It’s a penalty. Dubravka’s second arm catches Awoniyi’s leg.

“There is a lift in the arm from Dubravka to stop Awoniyi getting past him and to the ball. He doesn’t need to do that, it needlessly creates contact. Newcastle have gotten away with one there.”

The defeat to Newcastle means that Forest are now 16th in the Premier League table with 21 points from 24 matches.

The Reds are only two points above the relegation zone. Forest have lost three of their last four Premier League games.
