Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo delivered an ultimatum to Nuno Tavares when he first checked in at the City Ground.

Well, it would appear as though Espirito Santo saw something in Tavares – despite the player failing to make his mark under Steve Cooper.

Espirito Santo’s predecessor preferred Harry Toffolo at left-back and Tavares wasn’t even getting in the squad.

Now, The Telegraph has explained that Espirito Santo quickly saw something in the man on loan from Arsenal.

However, he issued him an ultimatum that he needed to prove in training why he deserved to stay at the club.

During the January transfer window, there were some reports claiming that Tavares might leave Forest.

However, he’s become vitally important to Forest and after beating West Ham, Tavares was praised by Shay Given on Match of the Day.

The player spent last season on loan with Marseille and scored six times to help the Ligue 1 club qualify for the Champions League.

Tavares can now grasp chance under Espirito Santo

It’s been quite a turnaround for the Portuguese player and in our view, Saturday was his best performance.

Tavares has started the last three games in the Premier League and looks to be the first choice.

It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the 24-year-old who was looking to be on his way out of Forest at one point.

What the future holds for Tavares remains to be seen but in the short term, he’s earned himself a Forest reprieve.

Espirito Santo deserves credit for demanding more from Tavares and now he will be keen to repay the faith shown by the Forest boss.
