Nottingham Forest allowed goalkeeper George Shelvey to leave for Dundalk in a permanent deal in February.
Last night, the goalkeeper endured a disaster as he was hooked at half-time following a shocking first 45 minutes.
Sligo Rovers put Dundalk to the sword with four goals inside 39 minutes and it led to Shelvey being replaced at the interval.
George Shelvey subbed at half-time of Dundalk drubbing
As an academy graduate at Forest, it won’t make anyone associated with the club happy to see Shelvey struggle at his new club.
The 22-year-old had been settling in Ireland and before yesterday’s game, he’s made two appearances for Dundalk.
Yesterday proved a disaster for Shelvey, however, and the man who left Forest in February was subbed at half-time.
It was claimed in the Irish Independent that the youngster wasn’t mentally right for the second half and was subsequently taken out of the firing line.
One of the goals scored by Sligo Rovers in their 5-0 win was a Shelvey error and perhaps there is an inkling that he could be homesick.
Moving to another country won’t be easy for Shelvey and there will be a period of adaptation for the man who came through the Forest academy.

However, he will need to learn quickly from this if he’s to secure a regular place in the Dundalk team.
Forest were right to sell Shelvey
At 22, it was time for Shelvey to head out and play regular football, with Forest not willing to stand in his way.
Ultimately, the player had made just three appearances for Mansfield on loan and played a further five games for Wealdstone.
That isn’t a lot of football for a player of his age and Forest were correct to get rid of Shelvey on a permanent deal.
Still, it’s not nice to see a young player struggle and Forest fans did get a glimpse of Shelvey during the pre-season campaign.
He performed okay during those games but following the signings of Matt Turner, Odysseas Vlachodimos and Matz Sels, Shelvey was down the pecking order.
Dundalk looks like a good opportunity for Shelvey and it’s a shame to hear that he suffered the embarrassment of being subbed last night.
In our view, the League of Ireland outfit need to be patient with the player and the hope will be that he can come back stronger from this performance.
