Nottingham Forest don’t always get things right when it comes to the transfer market – and they’re even more unsuccessful it would seem when it comes to the loan market.
Enter Giovanni Reyna.
In the first half of the campaign, it was Andrey Santos. The Chelsea midfielder was plucked from the Premier League club and played for just seven minutes in the Premier League before being recalled in January.
Reyna looked like a fantastic signing from a Forest perspective. For Football Manager players everywhere, the 21-year-old is tipped for big things and he’d made 14 appearances for Dortmund this season.
Over the past few days, Reyna has got two badly-needed games under his belt for the USMNT. After last night’s he was awarded an accolade that really should be giving Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo some food for thought.

Giovanni Reyna claims accolade on international duty
Well, it proved a really good night for the USMNT last night as they tasted the sweet success of silverware. Reyna scored the second goal as the USA defeated Mexico 2-0 in the final of the Nations League.
Tyler Adams broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with an unstoppable effort from ‘downtown’ to quote the Americans. Forest gem Reyna then added a second in the 63rd minute with a smart finish.
After the game, Fabrizio Romano announced that Reyna had been named as the Player of the Tournament. He claimed two assists in the semi-final against Jamaica, finishing with three goals and five assists from his 10 outings.
Reyna will have been happy to park club football for now. He’s played for just 39 minutes since signing for Forest in January and it feels a strange signing.
Taylor Twellman has been heavily critical of Reyna signing for Forest. He called it out from the off, believing the player should have gone somewhere where he would have been picked.
Espirito Santo has to give Reyna a Forest chance
Last night, Reyna was handed a start and he didn’t disappoint. His goal was pure class and he showcased to Forest exactly what he can do if he’s simply given a run of games.
Right now, things don’t make sense.
It was claimed that Espirito Santo wanted Reyna at Forest. As a result, it’s mind-blowing that the head coach isn’t only refusing to pick the starlet but he’s utilising Divock Origi as a winger!
Forest don’t have much more time to see Reyna. Dortmund extended his contract in January and the Reds have just nine games to get the player accustomed to the Premier League.
Although the opposition is tougher in the Premier League, Reyna can do no more to convince Forest. With that in mind, Espirito Santo has to give Reyna an opportunity on the back of these USMNT performances.
