There shouldn’t be a bad word ever said about Scott McKenna when it comes to his three-year spell with Nottingham Forest and now he’s set for a shock move.

The Reds released the Scotland star in the summer – with Evangelos Marinakis reportedly enduring a frosty relationship with the player’s representation.

McKenna was utterly brilliant for most of the time he spent at the football club. He won the Player of the Match award in the Championship Play-Off Final and also claimed Player of the Year for 2021/22.

The defender did struggle a fraction to adapt to life in the Premier League but ultimately he deserves respect for the way he conducted himself as a professional at Forest.

Now, he’s finally got himself hooked up with a club and it’s one which has come out of the blue somewhat.

Scott McKenna makes surprise move after Forest exit

Last week it was claimed that former Forest defender McKenna would be making a switch to Hull, with the Tigers extremely keen to get a deal over the line.

According to Alan Nixon – The Sun’s transfer guru – the player is now set to sign a three-year contract with Las Palmas in Spain.

The centre-back will be linking up with international teammate Oliver McBurnie who signed for the La Liga outfit earlier this summer.

It’s claimed that McKenna had plenty of offers from England and Scotland but the chance to play overseas has swung the decision in the favour of Las Palmas.

Nixon believes that McKenna will pen a contract with the club later today – signing as a free agent ahead of the new season.

McKenna could shine in Spain

The one element that McKenna lacked to make him a real success in the Premier League was a little touch of pace.

In the Championship he largely played in a back three and his lack of pace wasn’t overly highlighted but in the Premier League there was no hiding place.

In Spain, the football is typically slower and that might help McKenna settle quickly and get himself a regular place in the team.

In total, McKenna played 106 times for Forest in all competitions, scoring three goals and claiming four assists.

To some degree, he’d still be more than capable of acting as a squad player at Forest but once Marinakis‘ relationship with his agent became strained there was no chance of a renewal.

Now, aged 27, McKenna will embark on a Spanish adventure and it will be fascinating to see how he performs in La Liga next season.
