Nottingham Forest have secured their first win of the 2024/25 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton.
It was another positive display from Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side who dominated against the newly-promoted outfit.
However, Forest struggled to make their dominance pay off with a scrappy goal from Morgan Gibbs-White proving the difference.
It was by no means the perfect performance but Forest are beginning to show that they are solving their issues at the back with only one goal conceded in the opening two games.
Forest are now in the top half of the table and the positive summer enjoyed on and off the pitch is paying off in these opening two games.
And the Forest fans took to social media after the game to share their thoughts on the performance of the match winner.

Forest fans share controversial verdict on Morgan Gibbs-White’s display
Despite scoring the winning goal, it was not the most straightforward performance for Gibbs-White who certainly did not have the best of first 45 minutes.
More signings could be on the way for Forest with Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah potentially on his way to the City Ground to add further firepower to the Reds’ attack.
Although Forest have made a considerable number of signings this summer, the likes of Elliot Anderson have been unable to earn a spot in the starting XI.

And it seems as if those Forest fans were not totally convinced by the performance of their number 10 prior to his goal.
One fan took to X and said how much better Gibbs-White was in the second half, ‘MGW came alive in the 2nd half, that’s what match winners do.’ Whilst another added, ‘it’s a win but we never put them to the sword,MGW he scored but his flicks n tricks are woeful but heyho onwards and upwards’.
It seems many thought the midfielder did not live up to his usual standards, another said, ‘Yes MGW! Terrible game but well done’. Clearly, the sentiment was shared with one fan adding, ‘Get in … MGW not had his best game but he does his thing when you least expect it’.
And one fan did not even realise Gibbs-White was playing, they claimed, ‘I didn’t know MGW was even on the pitch?! AWOL up to the goal.’ Another even said, ‘MGW actually other then the goal had a poor game but NONE of that matters’.
Morgan Gibbs-White’s display vs Southampton in numbers
Gibbs-White enjoyed a seriously impressive 2023/24 campaign for the Reds where he was able to return 15 goal involvements in the Premier League alone.
And the Forest playmaker has now made a solid start to the new season with a goal – a decisive one at that – in the game down at St Mary’s.
Here is a rundown of Gibbs-White’s display on Saturday in numbers…
- 89 minutes played
- 1 goal
- 57 touches
- 75% pass accuracy
- 3 key passes
- 9/16 ground duels won
- 13X lost possession
It does seem as if it was a mixed display from the Forest midfielder but he made it count when it absolutely mattered as he sealed the points in what was an important win.
