Chris Sutton thinks Nottingham Forest hit the jackpot with £12m summer signing after win vs Liverpool

Nottingham Forest claimed their best win since returning to the Premier League in 2022 by beating Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 1969.

The Reds won thanks to a goal from Callum Hudson-Odoi with just 18 minutes remaining and ended a long wait for three points at the home of Liverpool.

Forest have started the 2024/25 campaign with a new lease of life and have won two and drawn the other two of their opening four matches this season.

The Reds will now look forward to games against Brighton and Fulham before a trip to Chelsea prior to the next international break.

Forest have built their form this season in improving defensively and that already looks a million miles better than the rearguard last season.

Chris Sutton thinks Nottingham Forest signed a star this summer

The Reds were more meticulous in their approach to signing players during the summer transfer window. Quality over quantity was the order of the day and it appears to have paid dividends for Forest.

After the win over Liverpool, Sutton has backtracked on some of his comments earlier this summer when he backed Forest to struggle and has praised one of the summer signings.

He said on The Monday Night Club: “Murillo, I think he was Nottingham Forest’s Player of the Season last season, what a player he is, and Milenkovic, a shrewd piece of business, I think £12 million from Fiorentina. They were rock solid at the back.”

Milenkovic looks like a quality addition for Forest

Quite how Forest have managed to get Milenkovic for £12 million is a mystery. The Reds look to have struck gold with the move with the player helping Fiorentina reach back-to-back Conference League finals.

At 26, Milenkovic is in his prime and it’s hard to understand the thought process of the Italian club when it came to selling him this summer.

Forest won’t be bothered one bit, however. They have managed to get themselves a seriously good defender and it was his tackle that started the move that led to Forest taking the lead at Liverpool on Saturday.

There is even more to come from Milenkovic but he already looks like a really good signing. It’s only three games into his tenure at the City Ground but Sutton is right to heap praise on the Serbia captain after his latest performance.
