Fabrizio Romano says Champions League star given green light to leave with Nottingham Forest interested

Nottingham Forest will go in search of a number of players this month as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to push the Reds towards European football.

Forest have made a brilliant start to the 2024/25 campaign, sitting third in the table at the halfway stage with the good start now becoming a little bit more than that.

Espirito Santo has been hailed by Jamie Redknapp this season and Forest are busy surprising everyone who dared to dismiss the potential of the team.

Lots of players will be linked with Forest this month with the club keen on Brazilian attacker Kaua Elias.

Other players won’t come to any substance despite being linked with the club and now another player loosely linked with Forest looks set to be on the move this month.

Fabrizio Romano delivers update on Nottingham Forest linked player

Given the club’s transfer past, sources will naturally link Forest to a lot of players this month but it’s worth noting that quality over quantity will be the order of the day once again.

Ben Godfrey only signed for Atalanta during the summer transfer window, swapping Everton for the Champions League outfit in a deal worth £10 million.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the player isn’t in favour with Gian Piero Gasperini and he will be allowed to leave this month before the transfer window closes.

Godfrey earns £68,000-a-week with the Serie A outfit but has managed just five appearances for the team this season, failing to start a single game.

The versatile defender can play anywhere defensively and so far he’s been linked with both Forest and Wolves as the player looks set to return to England before the window closes.

Forest can do better than Godfrey

Given the success of Forest in the transfer market in recent times nobody will be dismissing any player before they arrive at the club.

Ultimately, the recruitment team has earned the trust of the fan base, especially given the brilliant work done in the summer transfer window.

Godfrey would feel like a bit of an underwhelming transfer, however, given that he doesn’t really feel like an upgrade on any defender in the Forest ranks.

At centre-back, he would have no chance of game time with Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic and Morato all considered very useful options.

In terms of playing as a full-back, Godfrey would be competing with Ola Aina who has been brilliant as well as the vastly improved Neco Williams.

There is also Alex Moreno in reserve and it’s hard to imagine Godfrey representing an upgrade on him either

At 26, the former Everton player does tick a lot of boxes when it comes to the profile of player Forest are looking for but we’re just not entirely convinced this deal would be right for the club this month.
