Whilst Nottingham Forest’s Premier League season is exciting enough, the prospect of hosting England at the City Ground will be an extra source of anticipation.
England will play at the City Ground in June following an 84-year absence from the stadium, last playing a fixture there in 1941.
Hopes within the Forest fanbase will be that they see some of their stars in the famous white of England, with Morgan Gibbs-White called up to the England squad in 2024 making him the most likely prospect.
Other English talents such as Elliot Anderson has also stated a claim to an England call-up, with Forest fans wanting Anderson and Callum Hudson-Odoi in the England team for their role in the club’s push for European football this season.
Forest fans will be in no doubt as to why their famous old ground has been selected to host such an occasion, but a report announcing the decision has detailed just why the FA wanted to take the three lions to Nottinghamshire.

The City Ground’s location played into the FA’s England decision
According to The Athletic, the FA’s preference for a long-awaited return came about due to a number of conveniences that the City Ground offers.
The report said that: “England had a blank space in their June calendar,” which made the rush to find a available space more urgent.
Continuing in the vein of conveniency, the report said: “Staging a game in Nottingham appealed to the FA because of its central location and transport links to the north and south.”
After Forest’s expansion plans for the City Ground were put on hold until summer 2026, the stadium was clearly available to the FA and with its geographical positon favourable to fans from both London and further north, it clearly made sense to take Tuchel’s side there.
It may be the first time that the senior squad has taken to the City Ground since 1941, but an England youth team did play in Nottingham in 2023, producing a quite remarkable result.
England Under 21’s produced a remarkable City Ground display
After the 7-0 victory over Brighton, in which Evangelos Marinakis was seen celebrating with the Forest players, fans at the City Ground will be struggling to recall a game at the stadium with so many goals.
However, in 2023, the England Under 21’s graced the City Ground pitch and demolished Serbia in a 9-1 rout.
Amongst the goalscorers that day were Premier League regulars in Noni Madueke, Harvey Elliot and Liam Delap, as well as Cole Palmer, who has been creating similar numbers of chances to Gibbs-White in the blue of Chelsea since his breakout season last year.
With Senegal set to be the opponents when Tuchel arrives at the City Ground, fans arriving at the City Ground probably shouldn’t expect to see a similar glut of goals to either the Brighton win or what the England youth set up managed, but an entertaining game can still be expected.
Gibbs-White and Hudson-Odoi have tasted England youth success in the past, so Forest fans will be hoping that this City Ground fixture will be the perfect chance for both to kickstart their senior England careers on familiar territory.
