Nottingham Forest really did hit the jackpot when Evangelos Marinakis chose to appoint Steve Cooper after parting company with Chris Hughton.
The Reds were rock bottom of the Championship when the Welshman came to the club and in a matter of months, the Reds were transformed into genuine promotion contenders.
Forest won the end-of-season play-offs at Wembley, beating Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the final to reach the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.
However, things might have been different had Forest gone down another avenue. Marinakis was keen to appoint Chris Wilder, for example, with Dane Murphy playing an integral role in appointing Cooper.
Nuno Espirito Santo is the man now in charge of Forest. Espirito Santo has been praised by Jamie Redknapp this season and the Reds fan base are firmly in the head coach’s corner.

Nottingham Forest wanted to appoint Jindrich Trpisovsky
The Slavia Prague manager’s agent Jiri Muller has been giving an interview to Czech newspaper iDNES regarding his client and things that have happened in his career.
It transpires that Trpisovky was offered to both Forest and Brighton with the current Slavia manager rejecting a chance to move to the City Ground.
Muller said: “When Pavel Nedvěd was at Juventus, Mino was convinced that Jindra would fit into his club puzzle. It didn’t work out. Then Nottingham called and Mino tried again: Jindra, this is exactly your chance, your life’s mission.
“Slavia was closer to him, which we had to respect. Only Mino didn’t forgive himself the remark: Nottingham Forest is a world brand, and if you return them to the Premier League, it will be a thousand times greater success than winning the title three times in a row with Slavia.
“And he didn’t want to reduce the quality of the Czech league by doing so. Anyway, look at the Premier League table.”
Jindrich Trpisovsky managerial record
This would have been a massive risk for Forest to take given that he’s only managed in lesser leagues than the Premier League or Championship.
Forest employed the likes of Sabri Lamouchi and Philippe Montainer as foreign options to try and get the Reds back to the top flight but with limited success.
| Jindrich Trpisovsky Managerial record | Win ratio |
| Horni Mecholupy | 46% |
| Viktoria Zizkov | 50% |
| Slovan Liberec | 50% |
| Slavia Prague | 66% |
Trpisovsky does have a decent record in the jobs he’s been in previously but appointing him at Forest would hardly have got the juices flowing over a promotion quest.
Thankfully, Forest went for the tried and test option in Cooper and he made it a case of third-time lucky for him in his own personal quest to win the play-offs.
