Nottingham Forest were beaten by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday but the team remains third place in the Premier League.

Goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Calvin Bassey gave the Cottagers hope in their own European quest, with Chris Wood’s 18th goal of the season proving to be in vain for Forest.

The Reds didn’t play well in West London. In truth, it felt as though a tough week of travelling and the extra time and penalties victory over Exeter had taken its toll on the Forest team.

Anthony Elanga made his 100th appearance in the Premier League down at Craven Cottage. He was largely isolated throughout the game, however, and failed to add to his goal or assist tally for the campaign.

Lewis McGugan picks Nottingham Forest Man of the Match vs Fulham

Troy Deeney picked Chris Wood in his Premier League Team of the Week. That did come as a surprise to a certain extent given that players who finish on losing teams don’t usually get in the running.

However McGugan gas picked someone else out for praise, feeling that goalkeeper Matz Sels should win some plaudits for his efforts between the posts against Fulham.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “I think if you look at the goalkeeper, a lot of times this season he’s come up with saves to win game for Forest and again against Fulham he’s made saves to keep us in the game and try to give us a chance to get something out of the game. He was really good again.”

Sels is the surprise package of the season for Forest

Although Sels did really well after signing from Strasbourg in January 2024, it was always thought that the goalkeeper would provide a short-term fix to get the Reds through to the summer.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo placed his faith in the Belgian this season too – choosing to keep hold of the funds that might have been required to land a new goalkeeper.

Sels has rewarded Espirito Santo for showing faith in him with a string of fine performances. He’s got 10 clean sheets this season and is firmly in the reckoning to win the Golden Glove accolade during 2024/25.

At 33-years-old, Sels is hardly a long-term solution. However, he’s proving an immovable object between the Forest posts right now and his performances have seen him become undroppable.
