Rob Jones told he made another ‘poor’ decision that previously cost Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest didn’t have the best of luck with match officials last season and copped a huge fine for saying as much publicly.

It all started really in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first game in charge of Forest when Willy Boly was incorrectly shown a second yellow card with more than an hour still to play.

Other incidents happened that impacted Forest as the season progressed, most notably against Everton where the Reds felt that three penalties should have been awarded.

That was the game that led to Forest posting their frustration on social media and eventually being fined £750,000 for their antics that implied bias against the football club.

Now, the referee who sent Boly off back during that first game under Espirito Santo appears to have made another sizeable error – albeit one during a similar incident which involved the Ivorian player.

Rob Jones makes another costly error during Premier League game

Ipswich Town defied the odds on Saturday to claim a valuable point at Ipswich and they were forced to play the second half with 10 men after Axel Tuanzebe was sent off.

His first yellow card was nothing short of a joke. The centre-back clearly tackles Morgan Rogers fairly but quite inexplicably, Jones pulls out the first of his two yellow cards.

It would end up costing Ipswich and had he not been sent off, the Tractor Boys might have fancied preserving their lead at Villa Park.

The incident gave Forest an unwelcome reminder of the tackle which Boly made on Adam Smith back in December 2023.

On that occasion, Jones couldn’t wait to get the second yellow out of his pocket and it was a decision that ultimately cost Forest as the Reds slipped to a 3-2 defeat.

Rob Jones won’t be in charge of Forest any time soon

The only time Jones refereed a Forest game this season chaos ensued again away at Brighton – despite the referee giving Forest a penalty in the first half for a foul on Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Towards the end of the game, however, Morgan Gibbs-White was sent off for a second yellow card, with both managers also seeing red and being slapped with touchline bans.

Gibbs-White went into a strong tackle with Joao Pedro and on reflection perhaps it was a yellow. However, uncertainly came when Jones clearly signalled that the player won the ball, with fourth official Anthony Taylor getting involved to send him off.

Espirito Santo was incensed. It wasn’t an ideal situation although at least it didn’t cost Forest any points but it did see Gibbs-White miss two games; one for the red card and a further game for his reaction.

If there is any positive to come from that debacle it’s that Jones is unlikely to ref Forest again any time soon and it would appear that he’s now annoying other Premier League clubs with some of his bizarre decisions.
