Martin O’Neill tells Nottingham Forest promotion hero he wishes he sold him on live radio

Martin O’Neill has shown no signs of ceasing his love-hate relationship with Nottingham Forest and things shouldn’t really be like this.

It’s really hard to knock O’Neill. He won the European Cup with Forest and was one of the finest wingers that has ever played for the football club during his days as a brilliant player.

Like a number of others before him, however, he chose to return as the club’s manager in 2019. With 19 games to go of the season, he took Forest backwards and out of the play-off places.

The Miracle Man wasn’t happy with his sacking. Although O’Neill did praise Evangelos Marinakis last night during the 0-0 draw with Arsenal, it’s clear that the pair don’t exchange niceties at Christmas time.

Martin O’Neill makes astonishing Lewis Grabban claim

The fans have had enough of O’Neill’s constant quips, it would seem – even if it’s hard to knock him for being openly honest about his treatment by the club when he was the manager.

A caller called Andy texted in on TalkSPORT this morning to get answers from O’Neill. He asked the former boss whether he was seemingly still bitter about how his time at Forest ended back in 2019.

He answered the question and then launched a scathing attack towards one of the club’s best strikers in recent memory and one who eventually completed the job of getting Forest promoted.

He said live on TalkSPORT: “Seriously now, I have got over it now, but it does take some time, I must admit, losing your job after 19 games when you haven’t had a chance to sign your own players and have a proper crack at the job.

“Honestly, it’s gone, it happened, you get over it. We weren’t playing the best football? That’s rubbish, he can’t have been at the games, we only had two players who were worthwhile. Seriously?

“I had Lewis Grabban, that I must admit, I hope Lewis is listening to this, but if I could have transferred him after the second day of meeting him I would have done so. Lewis had no interest in anything other than Lewis Grabban.”

Lewis Grabban record at Nottingham Forest

O’Neill claimed that he hoped Grabban was listening this morning which possibly suggests that the man who is still employed by the Reds was indirectly responsible for the former boss leaving.

Grabban was a brilliant signing for Forest at £6 million. Eventually, he finished his time at Forest in the best possible fashion by helping the Reds win promotion during the 2021/22 campaign – even if he did finish the season injured.

The player’s career pretty much ended when he left Forest as he went to Al-Ahli in the Middle East but didn’t really play very much at all as he struggled with injury problems.

It’s pretty clear where most fans’ loyalties will lie when it comes to the Grabban and O’Neill rivalry but it is at least good to know that the club legend is finally over his sacking as the club’s manager.
